William Chandler (3512) Ross County Tax Records Prior to 1820

In the Index To Ohio Tax Lists, 1800 – 1810, the editors Jackson, Teeples, and Schaefermeyer note that Chandler, William paid taxes in Ross County, Ohio in the years 1807, 1808, 1809, 1810, 1816, 1817, and 1818. Chandler was listed as resident in “No Township,” “1st District,” “Scioto Township,” “No Township,” “Hungtington Township,” Huntington Township,’ and “Huntington Township” respectively.

The following information was gathered in April 2008 from records available in the Auditor’s Office of the Common Pleas Court at the Courthouse in Ross County, Ohio. Records are incomplete for the first two decades of the 1800s and produced only the following verifiable notations:

Duplicate of Resident Proprietors Land In Ross County For the Year 1809, page 48

Proprietor’s name is Chandler, William, property taxed at rate 1 is110 acres, purchased from Nathaniel Massie, located on the water course Indian Creek, in Ross County, taxed for $3.32 and 5 mills

Auditors Duplicate, 1811 – 1812, page 9

Proprietor’s name is Chandler, William, property number 3604, 110 acres, 110 acres to be taxed at rate 1, original grantee is Nathaniel Massie, located on the water course Indian Creek, in Ross County, taxed for $1.25

Auditors Duplicate, 1814 – 1818, page 3, Huntington Township

Proprietor’s name is Chandler, William, property number 3604, 110 acres, 110 acres to be taxed at rate 1, original grantee is Nathaniel Massie, located on the water course Indian Creek, in Ross County. (Note there is no notation regarding the amount owed. Entries on the same page record data from 1815 through 1818.)

The above tax records provide concrete evidence that the Massie Land Warrant 3604 signed by Jefferson was indeed purchased by William Chandler no later than 1809, and that it may have been purchased earlier than 1807 when Chandler is first noted as having paid property taxes in Ross County.

Chandler family records contain a series of 1820 source documents locating William Chandler in Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio. Most documents relate to court judgments resulting from land issues: sales, surveys, and acquisitions. Note that two 1823 documents are signed by Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas, Humphrey Fullerton.
